DJ ROC

DJ Roc produces variant strains of Chicago Juke music, the ‘crack’ referring to the synapse snapping, potentially ankle cracking manipulation of rhythms and the sampling, hijacking and ultra-rhythmic micro-editing of black American pop’s dominant forms into a style that’s been developed and tested on the streets of Chicago.

The street finds it’s own uses for things. Βρίσκεσαι στον δρόμο με ένα μεγάλο άδειο καρότσι. Ακούγοντας τη φωνή σου από τα ηχεία, το δελτίο της τροχαίας, πληροφορίες για την κίνηση του δρόμου και των αγορών. Μετά τραγουδάς rnb. Κυκλοφορεί πολύ ρευστό. Έφηβοι υπό την επήρεια του δρόμου των Μουσουλμάνων Αδελφών. Είπε, δεν μπορώ να κάνω χωρίς το μπάσο στο κεφάλι μου ούτε βήμα, άνθρωπε μου, μέσα από το ραδιόφωνο. Μην πεις πως είναι jazz, τυφλή βία, πρόκληση για τα πόδια των χορευτών. Από το Low End του Chicago, και τα κατάλοιπα της εμπορικής μουσικής, μια εντελώς νέα και απειλητική χρήση του ρυθμού.

SIGHA

I’ve lived in London all my life, so part of that is always going to be lurking in what I do somewhere. It’s got a great history for music and is a real melting pot of different sounds, so it’s been really inspiring growing up here musically. Having said all that, I feel more at home musically in Berlin these days. There’s an amazing creative vibe in the city that’s incredibly inspiring. East Berlin feels like it’s in this state of slow dilapidation, there’s a sense that everything is decaying which is very beautiful to me.

Κάθε πόλη φτιάχνεται από κομμάτια άλλων πόλεων, αρκεί να ξέρει να τηρεί τις αναλογίες. Ο James Shaw (aka Sigha) κάνει κάτι ακόμα πιο ενδιαφέρον, αντιστρέφει τόπους και θέματα (Croydon, το νέο Detroit), σαν μια βόλτα στην άγνωστη περιφέρεια μιας πόλης που κάποτε ήταν οικεία. Η μουσική του μοιάζει να μην κάνει τίποτα, ωστόσο σε κάνει να κρατάς την αναπνοή κάθε φορά που πάει να πέσει το kick, μετέωρο μπάσο, παύση, και πάλι από την αρχή. Αγαπημένο παιδί του Marcel Dettmann αλλά και της Mary-Anne Hobbs (ταυτόχρονα), η περιπατιτική σχολή της techno στο κατώφλι της νέας δεκαετίας.

ODD FUTURE II

Tyler, though he has unusual taste, is no champion of abstract hip-hop. Consider this recent comment on his Twitter account: "Who The Fuck Is Antipop Consortium? Can People Compare Us To Cool Musicians? Fuck." And in that categorical way, it makes them the perfect rap crew for our time: Where we all live on the Internet, alone. Where the darkest corners of desire are a Google search away.  [PITCHFORK]

To hiphop ξανά στα άκρα από την νεαρή ομάδα των Odd Future. Διακινούν την μουσική τους ελεύθερα μέσω blog, έχουν μεγάλο στόμα, και οι πράξεις τους είναι ένας διαρκής αφορισμός της jazz, στο Chicago του 2010. Το τελευταίο album που έδωσαν (Domo Genesis) έχει και πάλι πρωτότυπη μουσική (αποφεύγουν τα πολλά sample), που χωρίς πολλά-πολλά καταφέρνει να χωθεί μέσα σου και να σε αναποδογυρίσει όπως μόνο το ψημένο hiphop μπορεί. Ελπίζω να ξέρουν τι κάνουν (και να μην χαζέψουν από τις πολλές συνεντεύξεις).

I chose the Middle East as the theme, then decided to limit myself to music mainly from Iran and Turkey, with a couple of exceptions from Afghanistan and Egypt. The mix demonstrates some of the amazing melodic and rhythmic charateristics of Middle Eastern music, and shows how adaptable these can be... Overall, this music can be psychedelic, emotive, spooky, funky, sometimes all of these things at once.  [GEIOM]

Χάρμα μεσανατολικής μουσικής από τον Karmal Joory (aka Geiom). Τουρκία και Ιράν, Αίγυπτος και Αφγανιστάν. Εντελώς οικεία ακούσματα, έστω κι έμεσα, λόγω της μεγάλης επιρροής που ασκεί η Ασία στην bass μουσική τα τελευταία χρόνια, τουλάχιστον σε μελωδικό επίπεδο. Αρκεί να σκεφτεί κανείς τα sinogrime θέματα των Dizzee Rascal και Wiley, τα πρώτα δωδεκάρια των Digital Mystikz, την δουλειά των Dusk & Blackdown, ή τις μελωδίες της Ikonika. Ελαστικό set, βολεύει όπου και να το βάλεις, αποπνέοντας τον βαθύ τόνο του Geiom.
